Houston Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men

Dr. Newall provides male plastic surgery patients with procedures such as abdominal etching, waist contouring, male breast reduction and hair replacement.

Abdominal Etching/Waist Contouring

Abdominal etching is a type of liposuction for men that defines the muscles responsible for the “washboard” or “six pack” stomach. The ideal candidates for abdominal etching are those who are not extremely overweight, but have isolated pockets of fat within the waist and abdomen that do not respond to diet and exercise.

During this surgical procedure, one or more tiny incisions are made so that the abdominal muscles can be accentuated and fat suctioned from the areas where excess fat occurs. The incisions are made so that they are hidden in the body’s natural creases. Very small scars are left behind.

Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Most patients are able to return to work in three to five days and can resume athletic activities after about three weeks.

As with all liposuction procedures, abdominal etching is not a substitute for diet and weight loss programs. Dr. Newall will determine if you are a candidate for abdominal etching and will discuss with you all associated risks and benefits.

Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is a medical condition used to describe overdeveloped male breasts, a condition that affects 40 to 60 percent of men, either in both breasts or just one. Breast reduction surgery can correct this condition and restore confidence to men who are affected. Dr. Newall will determine if you are a candidate for breast reduction surgery and also will discuss with you any associated risks, such as infection, skin injury, excessive bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia and excessive fluid loss or accumulation.

During breast reduction surgery, Dr. Newall will make small incisions to remove fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts so that your chest becomes flatter and firmer. The procedure normally can be completed in less than two hours under general anesthesia. Patients can expect to return to work in about three to four days after the surgery and should avoid intense exercise for two to three weeks.

Hair Replacement

A number of factors contribute to hair loss, including hormonal changes, becoming older and genetics. Hair replacement procedures use existing hair from the back and sides of the head, as well as mini and micro grafts, to fill in thinning areas.

Hair replacement candidates must have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head so that grafts and flaps may be taken and used in those areas that are balding or thinning. Dr. Newall will discuss with you your expectations, as well as associated risks including infection, excessive bleeding and scarring. Factors such as hair color, texture and extent of waviness or curliness may also affect your results.

Hair replacement procedures can be completed under either local or general anesthesia, with most patients returning to work after a few days and resuming normal activities after a month.
